For the second year in a row, Lura Consulting is helping the Mayor’s Invitational Softball Tournament in Oakville advance its goal towards Zero Waste. Zero Waste initiatives included proactively planning to reduce waste with vendors and food providers, providing water bottle refill stations instead of disposable beverage containers and Zero Waste stations with recycling and compost options.
Volunteer staff from Lura Consulting – the Zero Waste Team – were on hand at the tournament on Thursday, July 10, 2014 to help players and spectators sort waste created at the event and engage them in conversations about how they can reduce waste on a regular basis.
Halton Region provided bins and collected recycling and compost material generated during the event. The Region provides these services for community events to help fulfill its goal of diverting 65% of waste by 2016.
Over three quarters of the waste (by weight) from the tournament was recycled or composted instead of being sent to a landfill.
Lura looks forward to helping out again next year!
