Wednesday night marked a momentous milestone for Ontario’s Greenbelt and the visionary leader who made the Greenbelt a reality.
Over 250 dignitaries and friends of the Greenbelt gathered at Hart House at the University of Toronto Wednesday evening to celebrate the Greenbelt’s 10 year anniversary. Former Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty was recognized with a special award for his leadership in establishing the Greenbelt and supporting legislation a decade ago.
Lura’s President David Dilks and Director of Community Engagement Jim Faught were on hand to share in the celebration with Mr. McGuinty and all those who worked so hard to establish one of the largest greenbelts in the World. David Dilks led the public consultations on the original Greenbelt Plan – with some of the largest public meetings ever held in Ontario – and Jim was a member of the Greenbelt Task Force which helped shape the Greenbelt Plan.
Lura’s involvement in this milestone project continues 10 years later – the firm is leading public consultations on the provincial Coordinated Review of the Greenbelt and Growth Plans. The first wave of consultations was completed last Spring, with over 3,000 participants attending 17 town hall meetings across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. A second round of consultation is planned for early 2016 to receive public feedback on potential changes to the Greenbelt and Growth Plans.
“It has been an incredible honour for Lura to be involved for over a decade in developing and now refining such a game-changing provincial plan,” said Dilks. “We salute the leadership of Dalton McGuinty and all those in government, industry and environmental organizations who contributed to Ontario’s Greenbelt, which has become such an important and prominent feature in Southern Ontario.”
